Toggle the marks on and you can see every non-printing character in your Word doc. When shown, the formatting marks reveal spaces, tabs, and paragraph breaks in your document. Spaces are shown as a dot between words and punctuation, tabs are shown as arrows, and paragraphs are shown with the paragraph symbol. Select the tab marks to show or hide. Under Always show these formatting marks on the screen, select the check box for each formatting mark that you always want to display regardless if the Show/Hide button is turned on or off. Clear any check boxes for ones you don't want always displayed.

Short Answer: Command-8 (⌘-8) There’s a keyboard shortcut for toggling invisible characters (like paragraph marks, and spaces, and tabs) in Microsoft Word on a Mac and as far as I know it’s worked in every version, since the beginning.Command-8 does it. Command-8 to show them, Command-8 again to hide them. It's actually on the Standard Toolbar. For whatever reason it was omitted altogether from all tabs of the Ribbon as well as the Formatting Toolbar in Mac Word 2011. You can also toggle the non-printing characters using the Command+8 keystroke or take the long route through Word Preferences View to check the box for All in the Nonprinting Characters section. Many of the shortcuts that use the Ctrl key on a Windows keyboard also work with the Control key in Office 2016 for Mac. However, not all do. Note: If a shortcut requires pressing two or more keys at the same time, this topic separates the keys with a plus sign (+).
